Whether you have been a crochet devotee for years or are new to the craft, Super Stitches Crochet: Essential Techniques Plus a Dictionary of More than 180 Stitch Patterns is a simply super reference for your crochet tote bag. Portable, with a handy lay-flat binding, this volume is both informational and inspirational. It includes an extensive techniques section, helpful charts on understanding symbols and abbreviations, a discussion on selecting yarns and hooks, and advice on assembling pieces and even laundering items. The heart of this book is, of course, the more than 180 stitch patterns each with row-by-row instructions and accompanying diagrams on the left-hand page, and a photograph of a sample swatch on the facing, right-hand page. Each pattern has been crocheted using pearl cotton and a size C/2 (2.5mm) hook, making it easy to compare final results. Beginners can clearly see the different handiwork that results from using single crochet or extended single crochet of half double crochet and double crochet; more experienced crafters will be happy to compare the several open work, arch, and textured patterns or to examine the laces, medallions, and a wide variety of shapes. There is also a large section on edgings and a separate chapter on specialty crochet work, including broomstick lace and Tunisian crochet.
